Tongs, T-Tongs, Tongs!

February 22-24 | Guilford Art Center | Guilford, CT

In this 3-day workshop students will learn the process of forging their own blacksmithing tongs. Just like the hammer and anvil, tongs are a fundamental tool for blacksmithing, and the ability to forge your own is a valuable skill for any smith to have. Throughout the workshop we will go over the geometry and the hand forging techniques to create multiple functional pairs of tongs.

The Basics of Tools Making

February 29-March 1 | Brookfield Craft Center | Brookfield, CT

Learn the basics of forging steel, drawing out and isolating mass, grinding, heat treatment and creating your own hand forged blacksmithing tools. Projects will include basic tools and a pair of scrolling tongs.

This course is open to total beginners (ages 16 & older), as well as those with forging experience who are new to tool making.

In this two-day beginner class students will be introduced to the art of blacksmithing in a fun and enthusiastic environment. This class will focus on the basics of forging in order to create one of a kind wall hanging, riveted coat racks.

Join other teens learning the basics of forging beautiful steel objects in a fun, enthusiastic, and inclusive environment! Throughout the week Anna will guide you through proper techniques of swinging a hammer at the anvil and working a coal forge, while covering forging techniques such as tapering, twisting, bending, and spreading steel. These basic skills and techniques will allow you to complete a variety of projects and create your own unique works of art and functional objects.

Forging Ahead: Educators' Retreat

July 27-31 | Touchstone Center for Crafts | Farmington, PA

Come learn the art of blacksmithing in a fun, enthusiastic, and inclusive environment! Pound out the stress of the year as you learn to properly swing a hammer at the anvil, work a coal forge, and have fun forging hot steel! Throughout the week techniques such as tapering, twisting, bending, and spreading steel will be covered in order to give you the skills to complete a variety of projects. In the end, everyone will walk away with their own hand forged objects and the skills and knowledge to forge ahead and continue exploring blacksmithing.

Open to anyone but designed for K-12 educators and those studying to be educators.
